Kathryn Drake

Kathryn S. Drake, born Washington, D.C., January 27, 1955; admitted to bar: 1979, Kentucky; 1994, North Carolina. Education: University of North Carolina at Greensboro (B.S. magna cum laude 1976 in Mathematics); Phi Beta Kappa; University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (J.D. 1979); Phi Alpha Delta. Member: North Carolina State Bar (1994).

Kathryn and her husband, Frank, have 2 children, Anna (24) and Ben (22). Anna graduated from Elon University in 2007 and is currently a third year law student at Elon University School of Law. On December 26, 2010, Anna married Bryan Dunkum, a fellow third year law student from Richmond, Virginia. Ben is a senior at UNC-Wilmington majoring in English.

Kathryn and Frank live in a home built in 1910 on North Main Street in Wake Forest which they restored. They were awarded an Anthemion Award in 1998 for their efforts. The house has the distinction of being the only house in Wake Forest that is in 3 historic districts. Ardent preservationists, in 2003 the Drakes purchased the William Thompson House (perhaps the only double-pile, pre Civil War, Greek Revial house remaining in Wake County) and moved the house to save it from demolition by the Bay Leaf Baptist Church. The Thompson House which also has the distinction of being Barney's birthplace, has been fully restored and is now a private residence listed on the National Register of Historic Places and protected as a Wake County Landmark. Their current preservation project is Frank's family home in Mount Pleasant, North Carolina. This house was built in 1853 and is also of the Greek Revival style. Frank's family bought the house shortly after the Civil War and it has been in the family ever since.

Kathryn is a member of the Wake Forest Presbyterian Church where she sings in the choir and is active in the Walk Through Bethlehem Ministry.

She served on the Wake Forest Historic Preservation Commission from 1998 – 2002 and was Chairman of that organization from 1998 – 2000. Kathryn has served on the Board of Directors of Capital Area Preservation, Inc. (a Wake County area historic preservation non-profit) since 2002 and served as Chair of that organization from 2004 - 2008.

She is also a member of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Preservation North Carolina and the Wake County Historic Society.
